WORLD HUMAN REPORT × MASH-SF
■ How many people are in mash?
About 17 riders. There are tons of kids on bikes in sf, this is the group we started filming 3 years ago, and wrapped with. We look forward to seeing all the new riders coming up!
■ Please tell us every mash members’ job title.
Mike martin and gabe morford. Co-directors, filmers, photographers.Dan valluci editor.
■ What do you think about fixed in Japan?
We really don’t know much about it. We visited tokyo last fall. The trip was super fun, all the riders we met were instant friends. One detail that is memerable is how japan has keirin races, and they are not popular among a younger audience. It is more about gambling, drinking, and smoking. We were impressed that a new generation has taken that same love of track racing, and took it to the street like the yoyogi park race series. All for the love of cycling, and less about the mob.
■ Do you believe there are differences between fixed in Japan and San Francisco?
Every city is different, ny has traffic, sf is a steep dence city, chicago has bad weather, tokyo has crooked streets. Each of these aspects pushes a city into different strenths and weaknesses. The more riders travel, and spend great amounts of time on there bikes in more cities, they develop a more broad range of abilities. It’s the same with a rider who rides a road bike, a track bike, a bmx or mountain bike. Cross training will make you a stronger rider as well.
■ The need to acquire everything that is in fashion is very common among Japanese people and I believe fixed is a good example. In order to obtain these goods, Japanese people are willing to pay more than necessary. We have seen many people trade fixed parts for an expensive price and it has been a problem for those who genuinely love fixed. What do you think about this current situation in Japan?
We don’t really know about this because we don’t live in japan. If you want to ride rare vintage bike parts that are collectable, then you will need to pay more for them because they are a piece of history. Our video showcases several riders with different astetics and sensabilities toward there lifestyles, this is reflected in there bikes. Some rider may want a bianchi pista concept because it is light, strong, affordable, and available at most bikeshops in the us. Some riders want to ride what I consider to be a time machine. A vintage bike with all vintage parts that match an era. It’s a time machine because it shows you what a rider of that vintage era would feel atop a bike from there time. Vintage eddie merckx with full campy groupo, or a vintage nagasawa with all inch pitch dura-ace groupo. What ever your into is fine. It’s more important that you are out logging hours on your bike, and you are comfortable doing so.
■ Are there many people who are willing to pay more than necessary for fixed parts in San Francisco or anywhere in America?
Ebay and yahoo auctions have made more vintage parts available to you where ever you live. Sometimes you can find a deal, and sometimes things sell for way more then there worth, but if someone wants it bad enough, they are willing to pay the price. San francisco has all types of bikes, and all types of riders. People who collect vintage, and people who don’t give a fuck about the name brand on there bike, but can thrash on it as hard as .
■ Please tell us which part of fixed you recommend.
There is an old race car phrase “Run what you brung” meaning, ride what you got, its more important to be a crafted rider then to have a crafted bike. Every rider has a different opinion of what they want in a bike. Andy has been on the same samson he got from e-frame bank 4 years ago for 250$. He has given that frame a great second life. Bianchi pista concepts are popular because they are affordable, light, and strong. About 550$ for a frame, fork, and headset. Sugino 75 cranks never break, we love phil wood hubs, they are from the san francisco area, and have been doing it for like 25 years. A lot or riders use vittoria rubino pro tires on the front and vittoria raundoneer tires on the back. They last a long time, and are smooth in all types of weather. Everyone rides a different seat, everyone uses different types of bars. Risers, bullhorns, drops.
■ Please tell us about San Francisco from mash’s perspective.
We all love sf, that’s why we live here. You can truly be yourself here, no matter what the end result is. The bay area is a really diverse landscape housing a diverse group of people.
■ How long did the project overall take you? If you can, please tell us the process of the filming.
We have been taping for 3 years. About 250 hours of tape all cut down to a 1 hour video, and an hour of bonus features. It took some inovation to develop filming techniques that bring the viewer along for the ride. we had to take the same risks to record these moments on tape, and I think it will take a little time for someone else to match the craft and riding abilility showcased in this video.
■ Finally, release dates for the film?
Also look for the dvd this summer. We hope july!
