WORLD HUMAN REPORT × IUTER
Iuter is a unique brand of its genre, impossible to define and categorize. Though born around eight years ago thanks to a snowboard crew, it doesn’t produce snow gear but rather 100% made in Italy streetwear; its quality and research makes Iuter worthy of a high fashion brand with young and urban cuts; even though worn by the best snowboarders, skaters and Djs, they don’t consider it as a marketing scheme: Iuters aim is that these dudes wear cool.
This brand, breaking all rules, can exist only by the willpower of its young founders, who work on their dream each and every day. Their energy must be utterly overwhelming, considering that Iuter is growing in a country such as Italy, which is experiencing a perennial economical and political crisis, with no help for young companies, where living is expensive, and taxes are high. Lately, Iuter broke out from the Italian boundaries, addressing itself to an international market with strategic dealers in Europe and a distribution in Japan, immediately interesting cool hunters from Berlin to Tokyo.
To find out more about Iuter, we asked some questions to Alberto Leoni, who together with Andrea Torella, is managing the brand.
■Japan Edition
WE LIKE TO PARTY, TRAINING KILLS RIDERS GO PARTYみたいに、ふざけたスローガンをずっと打ち出していきたかったんだ。
■Iuter Games

□Tell me first about what`s happening in Italy. We got some news about some pimping parties your prime minister attends, but how are you guys in Italy living up with this?
Luckily people in Italy have a lot of sense of humour, and that`s probably saving us at the moment. Although the situation may be at a critical point, and everybody is aware about it, we can all have a laugh about it. Nobody justifies what he does. Italy is known in the world for its art, history and culture and it`s a milestone to all of it. Today`s fashion, design and culinary culture all comes from our history. Italy has always been a land of contradiction, just the fact that our neighbouring countries stereotype us as the country of “Pizza, Mafia and Mandorlino”. You see, a good thing right together with a bad thing. Berlusconi no doubt is the bad thing in this case, so you just have to understand how much worth while the rest of the things we got here in Italy are!
So that being the prerogative, it seriously is frustrating to be Italian these days as it is not just easy to accept that a man like that can represent us around the world. But I guess it`s difficult for people outside Italy to understand it. You probably think we are sexist, corrupted and bigots, but I guess you have these people in every country.
□You sure are proud of being Italians, is that why you still produce your stuff in Italy? It doesn`t seem easy neither cheap…
But what`s easy nowadays? Anyways it`s not cheap. But let`s say it`s the only way that allows us to do what we want. I mean, it`s much more fun! Outsourcing in local factories, among local people is so different from working with big industries, where you send a mail with the design, receive the sample, say yes/no and start producing. It`s totally different, I can drive the car and go meet my suppliers! We go through the development together, and boy do these guys have a lot to say when it comes about development. They`ve got so much experience. I guess we manage to do these things only because we`re in Italy.
□That`s why you developed Uppercut?
Iuter is not just about big, colorful, loud and disrespectful graphics on tees! Getting in touch with the textile tradition and all the opportunities it gave us, we had to evolve creating something new, and Uppercut came to life. With Uppercut, we get to use these crazy materials, maybe materials that bigger and world famous Italian brands are using. Of course it`s expensive and that`s why we don`t hit big numbers, but we still manage to produce it in our small scale. Anyways, we`re good at using unconventional materials and finishes, giving our products originality, and personalization. But it also means a lot of time in research.
□So how do you guys manage to get all that Iuter stuff together if Uppercut takes so much time?
Well, Iuter collection`s colors, graphics and messages are all bound to our beginning. Right about the beginning of 2000, Giacomo and Filippo Kratter were still minor age, they gathered every Italian participating in the Junior World Cup of that year to compose the Iuter Clan, to rally against the Grenade Crew (then to be Grenade Gloves) lead by an upcoming Danny Kass, and the Finnish Trulli Klan. Then Andrea Torella asked me to design a logo for them. Between his bedroom and mine we printed our first T-shirts, and stickers. Giacomo and Filippo were kicking ass as snowboard pros, and with their charisma they tugged so many Italian and European riders, not only from snowboard, into the project, that it grew up to become a mega crew and family.
□So that`s how it started…
Yeah. I`m still proud of the fact that the first Iuter logo I designed, was made with Microsoft Paint. So as you can guess, I may have good ideas but I`m not a graphic artist. My luck is that, some of our friends are great creators. So, we first collaborated with Giorgio Disalvo and Luca Barcellona. I`ve always respected them for the things they`ve been doing and for who they are and I`m so happy they are now recognized internationally. And with time we started collaborating also with people like Alberto Antoniazzi, Yoclas, Daniele Attia, Tristan Vancini, Paolo Turbokrapfen Danese, Racoon Studio… we all know each other and all of us are friends, that`s how we`ve been working, and Uppercut is a natural evolution of that movement.
□What about the Japan Edition? We know it`s dropping this Spring.
It`s the first time I`m working with people I didn`t know, but working with Mhak, Shohei and Tenga was really fun. They`re also awesome artists, and I`m happy these guys doing completely different stuff from ours can represent us! We`re really proud of it, and when we met it was just one huge Kampai!
□You come to Japan often. What`s your impression?
Japan`s a bomb! We have many common things with Italy, but not the market! I think that things have to be precisely collocated in Japan. Skaters stick with skaters, and graffiti writers with graffiti writers and so on. In Italy we all mix together and that`s why things like Iuter come up. I love coming to Japan twice a year, and I hope I won`t stop. I always come back from Japan with a million ideas, so hope Japan definitely won`t stop stimulating me too!
□You said you originated from snowboard, so why don`t you make any technical gear?
Because we don`t care! We`ve always been dicks, and that`s why we always wanted to launch messages such as: WE LIKE TO PARTY, TRAINING KILLS RIDERS GO PARTY for example. The only technical thing we ever made was with Union Binding, and that was fun!
□Apart from snowboarders, and skaters you also support artists, Dj, athletes, soccer player…Is that about marketing?
We never thought about it as “sponsoring”, even though it`s very used in marketing strategies. We simply have a lot of friends and we like that they want to wear our clothes. They get involved in the project, and there`s nothing more satisfying than that!
□And Iuter Games?
Iuter Games are a snowboard event we have been organizing for four years now. It’s a one of a kind contest, where you’ll see something like 100 snowboarders, from top riders to entry level, riding all together in the park. I know, it’s sounds like organized chaos, but I assure you, it’s a contest! Every year we see more people coming at the Iuter Games, not for price money, but it’s the italian snowboard scene gathering, and for once everybody remembers why they’re riding for: fun. If the Iuter games are so important for the scene, just imagine what they mean to us. For a couple of days we go back to what we were when it all started. We won`t miss it and, you wouldn`t miss it too!
□So you`re still bad boys?!
Hahaha. We`ll always be loud and Italians, of course we`re a bit more grown up now. Let`s say each Iuter Game and Iuter Party give us the chance and makes us be what we came to be.
