WORLD HUMAN REPORT × RAW
SC:Ready Amongst Willing
□ When did you first start planning RAW before you actually started in 2006?
SC: There wasn’t a real plan in place at the beginning. We just wanted to get things rolling, have a few items made, and see where it went from there.
KS: The idea of what became RAW came during a long conversation at an October 2005 wedding in Upstate New York. Quite simply, it was a pact to do something if the opportunity presented itself. When it did in early 2006, we hit the ground running with a consistent flow of ideas that has not ceased. We did not really plan anything when we first started. We learned to plan.
□ Was there anyone who supported you or helped you get RAW started?
KS: Four people helped me get RAW started. Steve Costello inspired me by being inspired to make something happen back in 2006. My mother agreed to sew labels onto/into every piece we made and my little sister helped me pack boxes when our warehouse was still in my parents’ dining room. My dad, who is a service manager at Ford Motor Company, advised me on how to make and keep people happy. My wife, Jennifer, has put up with my bullshit and infatuation with making accomplishments since February 2006.
SC: Kev does more than his share of work every single day of the week. It’s damn near impossible to keep up with him. My father, mother, brother and sister and grandmother all helped to get us started and have continued to support our efforts to this day. My girlfriend, Yolanda has been amazing! She’s always kept an open mind and offered sound advice when it was much needed. Come to think of it, she’s contributed on a number of key decisions we’ve make over the years. Priceless!
□ What were you two doing before you guys started RAW?
KS: Prior to starting RAW I had two sales positions with large, multi-billion dollar corporations, one for 2 years and the other for 3 years. RAW was a side project during some of this time that Steve and I worked on at night and on the weekends. I often questioned what I was doing with my life, especially once RAW started, but I realize now that I learned a ton of valuable lessons that are now applied to Steve and I’s business model for RAW. There are basic functions of a business that you don’t concern yourself with when they are not your responsibility, but, now that they are, I realize why some of my superiors made the decisions that they made. I also understand the constant concern for productivity that they had for the group that I worked with at those jobs. Every person affiliated with a business is an investment, and, in the end, I’m happy that Steve and I chose to invest in ourselves and others than be someone else’s investment.
SC: Before RAW became our focus, I was kind of all over the place when it came to work. Couldn’t really stay at one place because there was always this lingering feeling that there was something else I should be doing. I wasn’t happy working for other people but at that time I had to, to keep the lights on and a roof over my head. Even though I wasn’t happy at any of those gigs I definitely learned a lot of things that I can actually apply to the situation we are in now. Working for yourself is a huge blessing and we’re doing everything we can to build upon things. We definitely appreciate all of the support we’ve been shown over the years and we look forward to providing more for the people who have contributed to the brand’s success!
□ Could you tell us about your personal history?
SC: I was born in New Bedford, MA in 1980. My early years were spent in New Bedford and Acushnet, MA. When I was 9 my family moved to Malden. That’s when I got my first skateboard and it’s been a part of my life since then. After graduating high school I moved to Somerville. I lived there for almost 10 years. It’s where I met my girl, Kev and I started RAW and opened our store. Its’ a great city within minutes of Boston. Right now, I live in Worcester, MA with wifey. It’s a little further away from the Boston but we like it. Going to be here for a bit. We have a few friends out here so the transition has been pretty smooth. Sometimes you got to switch things up…
KS: I grew up in Linwood, Massachusetts, which is a small mill village in Central Massachusetts. There are 11 houses in my neighborhood, and 8 of them are occupied by my family. The other 7 houses are my aunts, uncles and cousins and the situation allowed for me to build great relationships with my family outside of my own house since the time I was very young. My dad worked his ass off for more than 12 hours a day to provide for my family and because of that, my mother was able to stay at home and be with my sister and I. My mother had a full time job of making sure my sister and I did what was right and she got paid nothing for it. If there was a monetary value attached to her efforts, she would be a millionaire. Now that I have a brand, I have done my best to apply this work ethic and care to my business so that it provides for my family. I often work more than 12 hours a day and there was a long period of time where I did not take a paycheck from RAW so that the money left in our bank account would help RAW grow. My past in my neighborhood has also led me to do my best to treat those affiliated with RAW like family, although there is no bloodline involved.
□ What is the meaning behind the name RAW?
SC: Ready Amongst Willing pretty much means “put up or shut up.
KS: RAW is an acronym for Ready Amongst Willing. Most companies have the long form of their name and abbreviate it afterwards. Honestly, we had the name RAW and made up the long form afterwards. It means what it means. Everybody talks like they are willing to make it happen, but not many are ready to suffer the consequences of their ideas.
□ When did you start your shop in Somerville?
SC: We opened our first store on May 23, 2009.
KS: Originally, it was named Assemble & Conquer to avoid complications with supporting other brands that we wanted to back. When we found out that other quality brands wanted to be affiliated with RAW, it was both an easy transition and an ironic twist of the original namesake.
□ What is your shop and brand concept?
KS: We do what we want to do. Some people like it, some don’t. After almost 5 years the people who don’t like us are the ones who tried to take advantage of us and failed. In certain definitions of the English language, RAW means “face value”, which means it is what you see and you can make it mean what you’d like it to mean.
SC: We’d rather have people pick RAW up on their own than force it into their hands. We strive to keep everything honest and straightforward. What you see is what you get is the concept. I think it’s a kind of a New Englander’s approach to things that has been instilled in us from a very young age.
□ What do you think is important in maintaining your brand image and design?
KS: Hard work. That is what maintains any brand’s image and design. I’ve seen my parents be productive from 4 am to 7 pm or later every day for 33 years. That is what it takes. People who are not willing to work harder than everyone else are weak.
SC: Along with hard work, I think communication might play just as big of a role. We strive to get better at communicating things more clearly on a daily basis which in turn helps to maintain our brands image and design process. Communication clearly plays a huge role in things especially when it comes to working with people in other countries who communicate in different languages…
□ Are there skateboarders that you support?
KS: Yes, there are. We support every skateboarder in the world that supports us.
SC: We support the people that support us whether it’s on or off the skateboard. There’s Dana (Ericson) and a handful of others that we support more directly…
□ What do you keep in mind when you are creating a clothing product?
KS: Quality, aesthetics and the simplicity of both of them. Design is not about how many features you can add to a piece at one time or how much you can manipulate a computer program. It is about how you can get to a point that someone besides you can accept and appreciate.
SC: We have a recipe that consists of three ingredients. All three ingredients can be found in each and every release. Go fish…
□ Do you have designers that work exclusively for RAW?
KS: Yes, we do.
SC: The only people that work exclusively for RAW are Kevin and I. There are others that execute things for us from time to time and we appreciate all of the work they’ve done for us in the past and what they’re working on for us now.
□ If you don’t mind, could you tell us the names of your designers?
SC: Sure… Tim McAuliffe, Grandison Taber, Matt Tanner, Jonah Miller, Charlie Crowell, James Callahan, and youngest contributor at age 11, Stephen Sampson. It has been a pleasure working with all of these guys.
KS: We specifically brand projects that we do not execute ourselves with the name of the person who put in the work for RAW. Many brands have gained credibility by employing the efforts of designers who already have a longstanding reputation. We choose a different path by employing the efforts of a different group. If our brand, because it is young, is virtually unknown to the majority, we’d rather work with artists who are virtually unknown to the majority, because talent is not necessarily based on how many people have seen your work. We’d rather, more often than not, be a part of the beginning of someone’s reputation than capitalize on what they’ve already accomplished.
□ What is the source of inspiration for RAW’s designs?
KS: First and foremost, skateboarding. After that, anything that reflects the mentality of the skateboarder is a great starting point. For example, we have executed several ideas that are centered around the American Revolution, which happened on the same streets that we skate in the city of Boston. An entire free nation of people was formed by the radical thoughts of people who didn’t like being told what to do, and if you can’t relate to rebellion, then you have no idea what skateboarding is.
SC: I think where we are from, is probably our biggest source of inspiration.
□ How did the collaboration projects with Western Edition and Expedition come together?
SC: Joey Pepper, Rob Welsh, and Jake Mednik had a lot to do with making the Expedition project happen. That was fun to be a part of for sure because we know those dudes and support what they do. When it came to our project with Western Edition, our boy Nate put us in touch with Ian, he liked our idea and the rest is history. I’m proud to have been a part of both processes.
KS: As Steve said, they both came about through the recommendations of supporters of the brand. As far as the concepts and executions of the projects are concerned, no one in the skateboard industry could have drawn a portrait of Marvin Gaye than Ian Johnson and it’s really fulfilling to have Red Sox themed pro models made for die hard Red Sox fans like Joey and Rob.
□ What can we look forward to from you guys in the future?
KS: Progress. That’s what we make every day. After almost five years, the most consistent aspect of our business has been to get better at what we do. We’ve done so, and we will continue to do so.
SC: The future, eh? I can’t say too much but we are currently working on projects with a couple brands that we have a great deal of respect for. 2011 and 2012 are certainly going to be interesting… I’m excited to see how it all unfolds.
